How Full is Your Bucket?

At Convent Glen Elementary School, we have established a school wide initiative called “How Full is Your Bucket?”, based on the book “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” by Tom Rath. It encompasses anti-bullying prevention and supports the values of character education.

The book explains to children that we all carry an invisible bucket, where we keep our feelings about ourselves. When our bucket is full, we are happy; when it’s empty, we are sad. It's important to know that we can fill our own bucket and so can others. We can also dip into other people’s buckets. We have found this message to be effective in helping the students understand the effect that their actions have on others.

We encourage everyone in our school to always make a conscious effort to be a “bucket filler”!

What are bucket fillers? "Bucket fillers" are those who help without being asked, give compliments, demonstrate caring and compassion towards others, and generally spread their good feelings to everyone.

What are bucket dippers? "Bucket dippers" rob us of happy feelings by refusing to help with a task or by saying/ doing cruel things. If a student makes a poor choice, we ask them what they can do to fix their mistake and be a "bucket filler" next time.

Our student pledge: “I promise to do my best to be a bucket filler every day ~ at school, at home, and everywhere I go.”

In the last few years, we have been “bucket fillers” by supporting: Cancer research with our Terry Fox Walk, United Way, Education Foundation, Ottawa Food Bank, and the Ottawa Mission (just to name a few endeavours)!

OCDSB Character Education attributes: acceptance, appreciation, cooperation, empathy, fairness, integrity, optimism, perseverance, respect, and responsibility.
